Poetry:  Christmas Morning

Back Home Up Next

Christmas Morning

The wide-eyed child looked down in dismay,

He noticed his present, due to be opened today,

It was not the right size and seemed far to light,

No sound when he shook, no silhouette from the light,

He told what he wanted to both his parents and friends,

And he prayed that maybe Santa, would forgive some small sins,

Despite his great hopes, he could tell by the wrapping,

His hopes were now lost in the wind, helpless and flapping,

Then here came the footsteps, signaling the time,

He stared at the ornaments, their cheer he would mime,

For he was not truly happy, he knew his dreams dashed,

If not for his parents, he would have shouted and thrashed,

Forcing a grin, and saying good morning,

He hid his heart’s pain, at the loss of his yearning,

Obliging his kin, while discontent swelled within,

He opened the package, and flew out of the den,

His composure was gone, his nerves were at end,

Later he would find his feeling weren’t broken, and could only bend ,

For the gift he received, was not what he wanted,

And his pain and his fears, in his mind still haunted,

He gave it a try, a go, at the best,

And, for a while, the gift passed the test,

He learned that the present he had once desired,

Was actually worthless, and would leave his heart mired,

For the short time he spent, with his newly begotten gift,

Was a time of reflection, in which he let his pain drift,

He saw that the outside, was little but shell,

An items true worth, only time spent can tell,

He soon grew to know, that above all things,

Be they, new toys, clothes, or expensive rings,

Only go to show fortune, emptiness, and a greed that clings,

A real gift, is one, where the soul gleams and sings,

From that holiday on, he told all that he knew,

Despite broken dreams, some will come true,

To set ones sights, upon a sole item,

Is shallow, crude, and makes joy feel blighted,

With such newfound knowledge, he brought himself peace,

The gift of all gifts, to give and receive,

Because peace is of love, the most coveted emotion,

The loss of a hope, created a boat, to navigate, life’s deep ocean.
